I liked how the Leafs reacted post game last night

The Leafs didn't deserve two points last night. Thanks to Sammy, the buds stole a W from the Winnipeg Jets at Scotiabank Arena.

This underwhelming performance by the Leafs included a plethora of turnovers in the first period, a brief benching of the club's top stars in the second and penalties late in the third that had almost every Toronto fan looking skyward, just begging to be put out of their misery.

However, the Leafs prevailed. They found a way. Good for them. At this point, this team needs all the points it can muster.

But to me, it wasn't the end result on the ice that put a smile on my face. It was the postgame quotes from the coach and key players that had me pleasantly surprised.

After David Kampf was healthy scratched a few weeks ago, it appears Sheldon Keefe is doubling down on making players accountable. Keefe benched Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner and William Nylander for an entire powerplay in the second period after the three players were largely responsible for an egregious error - going off on a change with the man advantage and allowing two Jets to walk in all alone on Samsonov. Luckily for them, Samsonov came up huge.

"Obviously they make a mistake in that spot. It's a chance for me to hold them accountable and get some other guys to go out and do the job for us," Keefe said postgame.

In years past, after a terrible turnover or a bad line change, you'd usually see those players right back out on the next shift or PP. That didn't happen last night.

Matthews and Marner didn't mince words when asked about the mistake.

"That play shouldn't happen," Matthews said. "It's on us as a PP. We have to be better, we will be better."

"Obviously not good enough," Marner said. "We know that. We've been here for a long time. To give that (2-on-0) up, especially on a power play in a game like that, it's unacceptable."

I also appreciated Matthews in the dressing room when Samsonov offered him the belt for scoring the game winner. Matthews didn't accept it. He knew he wasn't the reason they won. He gave it right back to the man who stood on his head for most of the night. It was the right call.

For a team that routinely gets called out for a lack of accountability, I appreciated how they acted last night.
